  • To be consistent with the NFL league itself and avoid confusion, we have renamed last week's games as "week 2" and this upcoming week's games (Sept 30th and Oct 1) will be called Week 3.

    Week Two Wrap-Up
Peter's Quick-Picks came back to earth, going 7-7. Those who have followed them thus far are probably sitting pretty though in their respective office pools, with an 18-9 overall record. The straight-up quick picks were 9-5 and are now 22-7 on the season.

While we tell people to be cautious in using the statistics and ratings we produce this early in the season, the performance proved to be very strong:

    • Overlays: the Drive Chart overlays went 9-5 overall, and 5-0 with the five largest overlay picks. The Play-By-Play overlays were also 9-5 overall, and 4-1 with the five biggest.
    • Ultimate Prediction Machine: the "UPM" was surprisingly very good in the week two games finishing at 10-4 versus the spread, and 8-2 with the 60%+ confidence games. Of course after only one week of play, the numbers are very distorted -- two games had a 93% confidence factor!
As far as the commentary features went, the "contrarian indicators" were absolutely horrible, while the other columns produced some good results:
    • Turnovers: After concluding that turnovers had no predictive value in week two games, our columnist elected to produce turnover picks anyway, which went 1-8 against the spread!
    • CSM: The Cumulative Spread Margin plays, another contrarian approach, were also worth avoiding at all costs, as they finished 2-7. Please note that we have in our research shown that the CSM plays have been poor bets overall the last four years, but we will continue to produce the numbers since they are interesting data points in themselves.
    • Teasers: The two-team teaser was a winner again, but more exciting was the 5-team teaser hitting with GB, DEN, SD, OAK, and NYG all covering with the six point tease. Those of you who seldom play teasers may want to give this column a second look, since we have historically had very nice results with our teaser bets.
    • Motivation: The clear stars of the TMW week 2 action were our dynamic duo of motivational analysts -- Jerry in his first week of posting for us went 7-0 !!! A few more weeks like that and we'll change the name of the site to "Jerry's Motivational Page"... meanwhile, longtime favorite Teri went 2-1 in her opening salvo of the 2001 season.
    • Angles: The angles page produced little to excite our analyst, along with an 0-2 record on the week.
    • GF Report: Finally, the initial TwoMinuteWarning appearance of the "GF Report" (which is put together by some of the TMW gamecharters) was a success. The 2-unit picks finished 4-1, which even with the 0-2 mark on the 1-unit plays yielded a nice +3.6 units for the week.
