TMW is proud to introduce our Top 40 Defensive Ends!
The basic measure we begin with is how many "plays" a player makes -- this can
be anything from a tackle to a deflected pass to forcing or recovering a fumble. One weakness of this approach is
that the numbers below do not reflect the "opportunities" a player has to make the play
, but at least gives us a sense of how
active a player is on the field. Then we add in some new terminology:
Stop -- a defensive "Stop" is credited when a player's actions causes
the offensive play to fail to get the necessary yardage to be deemed a "Success" (see
our overview on Play Success Rates if you are not familiar with this subject).
Defeat -- a play is considered "defeated" if it's a 3rd or 4th down play that fails
to get the needed yardage for a first down, if the play has negative net yardage, or if
there is a fumble, interception or fumble recovery.
Median Yards -- this represents the median yards per defender's "play" or
in other words where on the field the player is typically making
his plays.
Stop Rate -- the percentage of a defender's plays that are also defensive Stops.
PM Rtg -- the TwoMinuteWarning overall "Playmaker" rating taking into account
the above factors. Note that this rating is effected by position,
so linebackers having more opportunities will generally have the highest numbers.
