NFL selections from Kevin Lewis
If you are one of the millions of people who has already read the "Bringing Down the House" bestseller, then Kevin Lewis will need no introduction. He is the central character and 'big player' in the team of MIT students who won millions of dollars at Blackjack over a span of several years from casinos throughout the country. His expertise however extends well beyond the game of '21' and indeed over the past two seasons he has published weekly picks for every single game, with a winning record of better than 55%!
Kevin will also be a participant in our Head-to-Head Challenge.

NFL Week One
Well it’s the start of a new season and my Patriots are set to defend their 2004 Superbowl championship. I honestly can’t see who beats them this season as their team is younger and more talented than last season. Adding the likes of Corey Dillon, Roosevelt Colvin and all those talented rookies to a solid nucleus of returning players seems like an unbeatable mix.
Just my two cents. In week 1, it is important not to be misled too much by pre-season hype. On to the picks…
NE -3 vs. Indy
I have already mentioned how much I like the Patriots this year and I see them coming out hungry against an Indy team that everyone is touting as a potential Superbowl contender. I don’t see it as I see Indy as too soft to win in January and too soft to beat the Pats when Belichek has had so long to prepare for them.
Miami +3 vs. Tennessee
As much as I like the Titans I just can’t see giving three points with them on the road against a Miami team which lost two high profile players. The reality is that both of those players were past their prime and in my mind overrated. Minor is a solid scatback who will do the trick until they bring someone in with a little size and Marty Booker is actually an upgrade to David Boston.
Pittsburgh -3.5 vs. Oakland
Home team Pittsburgh has a retooled running game that will give the Raiders trouble. I see a lot of points in this game.
Washington -2 vs. TB
Bucs were a tough look team last season losing more than a handful of games by less that a TD. However they are a year older at every skill position and have serious age issues on both sides of the ball. I go with the home team here.
Cleveland +3 vs. Baltimore
Not sure why people like this Ravens team so much. They will have a weak offense and will have to do it again with defense. Browns passing game has not gelled yet but I believe it will before too long as Garcia will be able to spread the ball around to a handful of talents.
Jacksonville +3 @ Buffalo
Jacksonville is everyone’s dark horse but the bottom line is they are a strong young defensive team and have an up and coming QB in Leftwich. Buffalo on the other hand is a team on the decline and this game will be another step in that decline.
Jets -4.5 vs. Cincinnati
Jets have an underrated offense and Carson Palmers makes his first NFL start. Jets got off to a slow start last year but with Pennington healthy this year will be a different story.
Chi -2.5 vs. Detroit
Just a bet on the home team as the improved Lions hype is not something I’m ready to buy in to yet. Harrington needs to show me something before I’m convinced that Rogers and Williams will really help him.
Cards +11 @ St. Louis
It is just tough for me to give this many points on a mediocre team in the first week of the season. The Rams are good at home and the Cards are beat up but the bottom line is St. Louis is not that good.
Seattle -2 @ New Orleans
Seattle’s offense can be one of the best in the league this season and playing in NO will not faze them. This game should be a high scoring affair but at the end of the day I’d rather have my money on Hasselback and Shaun Alexander than Aaron Brooks and Deuce.
Houston -4.5 vs. SD
Houston is the only team that’s never lost an opener and this will make it three in a row. Houston offense should be much improved and SD has nothing in the cupboard except LT and an up and coming TE.
NY Giants +9.5 @ Philly
Although I think Philly will easily win this game, I think the points might come in to play as the Giants know how to defense the Eagles as witnessed by two low scoring close games last season. Philly’s blitz happy defense, combined with a weak Giants offensive line and gun shy Kurt Warner make for a tough first week assignment for the G Men. However, Philly mediocrity on offense will keep it close.
Minnesota -4.5 vs. Dallas
Dallas will not stop the Vikings offense. Enough said.
SF +3.5 vs. Atlanta
Home dogs in week 1. SF is bad but the bottom line is Atlanta needs to show a bit more before I’d back them as a 3.5 point favorite on the road.
Denver -3 vs. KC
Love the Broncos here as I can’t see how they lose this game at home. KC cannot stop their run game and this will be a Quentin Griffin coming out party. Whoever has the ball last will win this game and my guess is it will be Denver by a touchdown.
GB +3 @ Carolina
Like Favre on Monday night against a team without the secondary to stop him.
